An edge filter for lubricating oil or the like having a cylindrical rotatable filter insert is to be cleaned in the closed state by flow reversal at a part of the filter surface. During normal operation, the entire filter surface is to be available for action. The solution is a U-shaped profile which permanently lies against the filter insert with one arm and thus on rotation of the filter insert serves as a scraper and which for cleaning is pressed with both arms against the filter insert so that a wash channel results which is connected to a flushing orifice and through which a backwash through the filter surface can be produced. When two such filters are combined, an expedient apparatus is provided for continuously operating machines.
