A tangential error signal generator for a video disc player in the PAL system, in which a synchronisation signal such as, for example, a pilot colour synchronisation signal which has been extracted from a colour video signal which has been read from a video disc in the PAL system, is compared with a periodic reference signal in order to generate a phase error signal which reproduces the phase difference between the synchronisation signal and the periodic reference signal. The phase error signal is changed in accordance with the direction of stepping and the stepping distance which are required for a desired mode of replay of the video disc player, for example stopped-motion replay, fast or slow replay.
