A high-pile fabric is produced on a circular machine by raising the needles to take tufts of fibres from a doffer-cylinder (18), Fig. 2 not shown, whilst the base loops (19) are held down by the sinker nibs. The sinkers are then withdrawn and the needles lowered to an intermediate position in which the tufts are brought into a position to be engaged by the sinker nibs as the sinkers are reinserted but without the old loops (19) being cast off. Thereafter the needles are raised and receive the base yarn (25), Fig. 6 not shown, and draw the loops through the previous loops and tufts of fibres. To ensure that the tufts engage under the sinker nibs nozzles are positioned to direct jets of air on the tufts at the appropriate positions. The fabric produced has the tufts suitably plated with the base fabric such that the fibres are not predominently evident on the back of the fabric. U.S.A. Specifications 1,114,414 and 3,052,111 are referred to. |
