Epoxy compounds are made by reacting on olefin with an organic peroxy compound in the presence of a catalyst obtained by heating ammonium molybdate at 250-700‹ C. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, butene-2, hexene-1 1 and cyclohexene. Preferred organic peroxy compounds are cumene hydroperoxide and tertiary butyl hydroperoxide. Examples describe the preparation of propylene oxide and cyclohexene oxide. The reaction may be effected at 50-150‹ C. under a pressure sufficient to maintain reactants in the liquid phase, if desired in the presence of a solvent. |
