Thickening and gel-forming properties of fine dispersions (in water or an organic liquid) of pyrogenic silica (produced by thermal decompsn. of a silicon-contg. substance) are improved by adding to the silica dispersion an addition cpd. contg. ethylene oxide gps. (pref. 2-500) in an amt. of 0.1-50%, pref. 0.5-5% w.r.t. SiO2. Controlling the viscosity and thixotropy of lacquers, paints, polymer and rubber compsns., adhesives, sealing compsns., etc. is facilitated. The effect is increased with the increasing number of the ethylene oxide gps. in the molecule of the addition cpd.
