PURPOSE:To prevent display characteristics from variation due to the change of a tilt angle by moving polarizing plates in accordance with the change of the tilt angle of ferroelectric liquid crystal which is generated due to temperature change and keeping the positional relation between the tilt angle and a polarizing axis at a fixed value. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with a liquid crystal element 1 obtained by sealing ferroelectric liquid crystal 5 between a pair of bases, the polarizing plates 8, 10 arranged on the outsides of the bases of the element 1 and a polarizing plate control means for displacing the polarizing plates 9, 10 so that the angles of the polarizing axes of the polarizing plates 9, 10 from the liquid crystal element 1 are changed. The polarizing plates 9, 10 are rotationally displaced so that their polarizing axes A, B are set up on the positions corresponding to the tilt angle theta of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 5. Thus, the polarizing axes A, B of the polarizing plates 9, 10 can be always set up on the positions corresponding to the tilt angle theta of the liquid crystal 5 by displacing the polarizing plates 9, 10 in accordance with the change of the tilt angle theta due to the temperature change of the liquid crystal 5 in the element 1 and controlling the positions. Consequently, the contrast of 'bright' display and 'dark' display can be held at a constant value. |
