The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the packaging of pressed bales (14) which are held under pressure between press rams (6, 7). For this purpose, before the bale (14) is pressed, a bottom foil (18) and a cover foil (16) for wrapping are introduced between the bale (14) and the press rams (6, 7). After pressing, an enveloping foil is guided laterally around the clamped bale by means of a packaging apparatus (8) and is closed behind the bale and severed. Provided for this purpose is a severing/welding device (13) which can be designed as an ultrasonic welding device. The bale is fixed by tie-round means during the packaging operation. For this purpose, the packaging apparatus (8) is mounted movably and consists of a foil carrier (9), a severing/welding device (13), a tie-round device (12) and, if appropriate, an extraction device (49). <IMAGE>
