The stopper for a taphole of a tilting steel converter consists of a cylindrical plug, which can be pushed in through the taphole until it is flush with the inner surface. It is retained in position by flexible steel strips, at least three in number, in the form of a star or cross, attached to the plug and projecting beyond its periphery. These act as barbs, preventing the plug from moving outwards until the converter is tilted, and they lose their grip under the heating effect of the molten steel. Slag is prevented from entering the taphole before the steel.
