PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion exchange polymer membrane having good chemical and mechanical characteristics at a high yield by using a polymer composed of substituted trifluorostyrene chains. SOLUTION: This is a polymer represented by formula I, and is provided by reacting α,α,β-trifluorostyrene in formula II with substituted α,α,β- trifluorostyrene in formula III. This copolymer has higher thermal stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical characteristic such as tensile strength than those of homopolymer of the α,α,β-trifluorostyrene. This basic polymer is phosphorylated, carboxylated, quaternary aminoalkilated, or chloromethylated, and further denatured to provide a cation or anion exchange membrane. In formula I, two of m, n, p, q are larger than zero; A1-3 are alkyl, halogen, CF=CF2, etc.; X is SO3H, PO2O2, COOH, OSO3H, OPO3H, CH2NH3+ (R is alkyl or the like), and in formulas II, III, m>0; A is alkyl, CF=CF2, CN, etc. |
