2-Amino-5(6)-substituted-benzimidazole (I) [R3=C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, halo, nitro, C1-4 alkylthio, phenoxy, carboxy, trifluoromethyl; M+=alkali metal cation, hydronium ion! is prepd. for use as an antibiotic. 2.5g of 2-amino-1-isopropylsulfonyl-5(6) - benzoylbenzimidazole, 25 ml of water, 25 ml of acetone, 16 ml of 1N NaOH soln. are mixed and heated. 0.9 ml of methyl chloroformate is added to the reacted soln.. This is heated to evaporate the acetone, and then filtration of this gives 1.43 g of 2-amino-5(6) benzoylbenzimidazole.
