The present invention relates to a pedal and bottom bracket assembly for cycles, with cranks (4a, 4b) of fixed or variable length. Each crank (4a, 4b) includes two parts: a first part (10) fixed to the bottom bracket spindle (3) and a second part (11) mounted so that it slides on the said first part (10) and carrying a roller (12) guided by a cam path (13). The roller (12) is mounted on a slider (16) which can slide parallel to the spindle of the bottom bracket (3), under the action of a control member, between a first position in which the roller (12) interacts with the cam path (13) and a second position in which the roller (12) is detached from the cam path (13) and in which the first crank part (10) is secured to the second crank part (11) by virtue of a stud (25) on the slider (16) interacting with a housing (26) provided in the first crank part (10). <IMAGE>
