The support is for an irradiation apparatus, particularly an X-ray apparatus. The device includes a first C-bracket carrying a radiation transmitter and a radiation receiver at its ends. The device also has a supporting carrier device which can be guided on a cover guide. This is preferably in the form of a second C-bracket. A holder device of the first C-bracket can be guided along the second C-bracket. The support device also has a drive device which switches off on reaching a predetermined fixing pressure. The device may have an upper part (9) rigidly fastened to the second C-bracket and a positioning arm (11). The latter is pivotally mounted and is held under tension by a support spring and driven upwards against the spring by a driven spindle (15). A contact arm of a first end switch fastened to the positioning arm may lie on a spindle nut which engages the positioning arm.
