PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent type display device of a diode structure which will not generate discharge traces on electrodes. SOLUTION: The fluorescent type display device is provided with a vacuum-tight vessel 4, made of an anode substrate 2 and a cathode substrate 3 opposed to each other. A cathode is provided on an inner face of the cathode substrate made of a frame-shaped cathode electrode 5, with an opening 6 and a carbon material layer 7 fitted at the opening so as to be covered on the inner edge of the cathode electrode. An anode, equipped with an anode electrode 8 and a phosphor layer 9, is fitted on an inner face of the anode substrate. The phosphor layer faces the carbon material, at a part farther inside than the opening of the cathode electrode; and since there is appropriate resistance between the phosphor layer and the cathode electrode and the phosphor layer is inside the cathode electrode, discharge traces due to the discharge between the anode and the cathode is less apt to occur, and the display quality is less apt to deteriorate.
