The safety and alarm system is intended for a heavy vehicle, a lift engine, or cabin to signal when the horizontal condition of a platform is upset. An electronic circuit provides control for an alarm. The safety system comprises a rigid frame firmly attached to the vehicle etc, whose stability is being monitored. The frame comprises a base (7) with a cylindrical cage (8) and bottom (9). The base supports a universal joint (2), from which a mass (1) is supported by a rigid shaft. The lower surface of the mass has a spherical surface (3) which has a reflecting central area (10) and non-reflecting outer area (11). An opto-electronic emitter and receiver (6) assembly receives light reflected from the reflecting surface for processing to trigger an alarm when no signal is received.
