Layer element on a substrate is claimed. (I) consists of (a) a substrate with an even surface, modified by addn. of ions or ionisable cpds. (II) with a charge of the same sign and (b) one or more layers of organic materials (III) contg. ions of the same sign in each layer, the ions in the first layer being of opposite sign to ions (II) and the ions in further layers being of opposite sign to the ions in the preceding layer. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by successive application of solns. of charged materials (III) to a charged substrate, to give oppositely charged layers as above. The substrate is a metal surface coated with a single layer of a thiol contg. another ionic or ionisable functional gp. (A), a Si-contg. substrate treated with a silane contg. a gp. (A), or a polymer with gps. (A) introduced on the surface by suitable polymer reactions; (III) are monomers with 2 ionic or ionisable gps. (B1) of the same sign or polymers with many such gps. (B2) (polyelectrolytes), pref. with (B1) = (B2); solvent for (III) is water or a mixt. of water and a water-miscible non-ionic organic solvent.
