The press section, of a papermaking machine, has a press blanket (4) which is also passed through the initial press stage (6). The blanket (4) is conditioned between the initial press stage (6) and the entry into the press gap at the press section. The press blanket (4) travels over the web (1). The initial press stage (6) is formed by a press roller (7) and a suction roller (8) with a fourdrinier (5) round it. The press blanket (4) passes round a guide roller (9), pref. after conditioning, with suction to transfer the web (1) from the fourdrinier (5) to the press blanket (4). At the press section, a press blanket (4,10) is on both sides of the web (1) on passing through each roller press gap. At least one press roller (2) is a shoe press roller. The press forces on the web (1) are greater in the press section than in the preceding initial press stage (6).
