PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystal material, a manufacturing process therefor, its intermediate in manufacturing, a liquid crystal composition which is composed of the liquid crystal material as the key component and shows a negative dielectric anisotropy of a large absolute value in a wide temperature range, and a reliable liquid crystal display element of a VA type, and the like, using the composition. SOLUTION: The new liquid crystal material is a compound expressed by formula (1). In formula (1), R<SP>a</SP>is a 2-7C straight chain alkyl group; (a) is 0 or 1; R<SP>b</SP>is a 2-5C straight chain alkyl group. The liquid crystal composition contains the compound.
