Parent patent describes rotating tanks with a horizontal axis, esp. for use in wine-making. They are supported on steel rollers which also drive the tank. In practice slipping results when internal projections attract a considerable portion of the contents and set up a force opposing rotation. This difficulty is remedied by the addn of rubber or elastically deformable material, with a high coefft. of friction, to the usual metallic rollers which have to support only a fraction of the wt. of the tank. The latter is equipped with two metallic roller tracks which rest on the two rollers on shafts rotating in fixed bearings. A groove is made in the central part of the rim to receive the endless rubber belt, the thickness of which is greater than the depth of the groove. The belt travels round a tension pulley mounted in a fork attached to a spring. Thus the load is supported partly by the rim and partly by the belt. As the driving gullies do not have to carry the whole of the considerable wt. of the tanks and their contents, risk of slipping is avoided. The cost as compared with the use of wider rollers is much reduced and this is important in machines used for only a short time every year.
|
