This invention relates to new derivatives of dextran with a plurality of carboxylic acid groups located on intermediate glucose or glucopyranose units of the dextran polymer and substances formed from the same through the formation of complexes or chelation with colloidal ferric hydroxide in order to obtain stable products of low intravenous toxicity which contain a relatively high proportion of iron. In addition to this it relates to a process for the production of the said polycarboxylic acid compounds and the ferric hydroxide complexes described.
