<p>A method of functionalising a polymer of a type which includes, in the polymer backbone, phenyl moieties; carbonyl and/or sulphone moieties; and ether and/or thioether moieties; wherein the method includes treating the polymer to functionalise the carbonyl and/or sulphone moieties to provide functionalities which have a lower electron withdrawing effect of phenyl moieties in said polymer backbone than the carbonyl and/or sulphone moieties they replace; and treating the polymeric material prepared in order to functionalise said activated phenyl moieties. Preferred embodiments relate to the preparation of a bio-compatible polymeric material for use in medical applications by functionalising the polymer (e.g. of polyetheretherketone or polyetherketone) and treating it with bio-compatible moieties.</p> |
