PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform character display of smooth curves with a liquid crystal display element of a dot matrix type, or with a mixed type of character display and dot matrix display. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has: a pair of substrates that face each other; a pixel provided to one of the pair of the substrates, and includes a number of active elements; and a common electrode provided to the other of the pair of the substrates, and includes: two layers of transparent electrodes electrically insulated from each other; and a liquid crystal layer held in between the pair of the substrates. The pixel and the common electrode are formed on the opposite surface side of the pair of the substrates, and the common electrode includes a first common electrode, formed above the substrate and includes a display pattern for displaying the characters and graphics and a second common electrode, including the background of the display pattern.
