SYSTEM FOR DETECTING FUEL INJECTION TIMING

A system and method detects fuel delivery timing for a Diesel engine having a source of pressurized fuel and a fuel line for delivering fuel to a combustion chamber of the engine supply. A fuel pressure sensor senses fuel pressure. The engine speed is sensed. The fuel injection quantity is sensed and an engine load signal derived therefrom. A variable threshold signal is generated as a function of the engine speed signal and t he engine load signal. The fuel pressure signal is compared to the variable threshold signa l, and a timing signal is generated when the fuel pressure signal crosses the variable threshold signal while the fuel pressure signal is increasing in magnitude.
