The invention concerns a process for reducing the water content bound in t he capillaries of the fibre cells of milled solid matter and/or sludge that contains carbon and which is processed through a screen to form a mat. The invention compris es the following process steps: 1) The material to be used is milled, screened and distributed to several spreading-material hoppers designated for several grain sizes and their grai n size distributions. 2) As a first layer, a thin layer of fine material is scattered on a spreading, charging and filter belt. As a second layer, a thicker layer of coarse material is deposited to form a sandwich mat, whereby the depositing of the respective pile height of the fine material H F and the layer height of the coarse material H G of the sandwich mat is carried out according to the consistency and the proportion of fine material in the material used. 3) The sandwich mat formed according to the process steps 1 and 2 is fed int o the pressure chamber of the filter press by means of a belt according to the dewatering cycle while, at the same time, the pressed dry material is run ou t.
