Tetrahydroindanole cpd. of formula (I), and their esters, are new. R1, R2 = H, OH or 1-5C alkyl; R3 = H, or a carbonyl gp. derived from a 1-6C aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, 7-10C aromatic carboxylic acid or a carbonic acid ester. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as perfumes, or as intermediates in prodn. of pharmaceutical active agents. Prepn. of (I) gives good yields, and uses cheap and readily accessible starting materials. In an example 3-(cyclohex-3-enyl)propanol (50g) and p-toluenesulphonic acid (5g) were stirred at 50 deg.C for 6 hrs.. The mixt. was filtered and worked up by distillation to give 45g of bicyclo(4.3.0)non-3-enol as a 40:60 Z/E mixt., b.pt. 80-84 deg.C/3 mbar, m.pt. 35 deg.C.
