A blood vessel clip applicator (50) preferably includes two twist pins (16, 18) at one end, between which a blood vessel (22) is placed before occlusion. A magazine (28) in the blood vessel clip applicator (50) preferably holds a plurality of blood vessel clips (2) and can be rotated independently from a grip assembly, whereby the twist pins (16, 18) can be rotated to compress a blood vessel (22) held between them. A blood vessel clip (2) is preferably placed on the blood vessel (22) after it has been flattened. A blood vessel clip (2) preferably comprises spring quality material, and preferably has a head (1) connected to a first leg (4) and a second leg (6). The magazine (28) preferably has a constricted region (32) adjacent to an exit aperture. As the head (1) enters the constricted region (32), the compressive force exerted on the head (1) by the constricted regio n (32) opens the blood vessel clip (2) to an open position. In an alternate embodiment, a variety of blood vessel clips (320, 330, 340, 350, 360, 370) having different shapes, cross-sections and grooves are suitable for use with the blood vessel clip applicator. The alternate blood vessel clip preferably have two legs in a "V" configuration and a head connecting the two legs. The constricted regi on compresses the head ofthe blood vessel clip as it passes through the constricted region, thereby closing the clip onto the blo od vessel. These alternate embodiments may comprise substantially annealed metal.
