The invention relates to a setting alginate composition in the form of a two-component system composed of components A and B which forms a setting dental composition when these interact. Component A contains an alkali metal alginate, component B contains a divalent metal salt and a reaction rate retarder. The composition according to the invention is very suitable as impression material in dentistry.
