PURPOSE:To obtain a compact, lightweight battery having high performance by forming an electrode with a substance prepared by heat treating an aromatic condensation polymer having specific polyacene skeletal structure and a specified specific surface area, and acid treating the heat-treated material, then forming an electrode with the material obtained. CONSTITUTION:A condensation polymer of phenol formaldehyde is mixed with an inorganic salt such as zinc chloride, and the mixture is heated and cured. The material obtained is heated in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and polyacene skeletal structure is formed by dehydrogenation so as to have a ratio of hydrogen atom to carbon atom of 0.5-0.05. The material obtained is washed with water and dried to obtain an insoluble, infusible material having a specific surface area measured by BET method of 600m<2>/g. This material is treated with strong acid such as sulfuric acid and used for the positive electrode or a negative electrode of a battery. By using this electrode, the battery which is compact and lightweight and has large capacity and high oxidation stability can easily be manufactured. |
