Medical laser apparatus for use in photodynamic diagnosis and photodynamic therapy of cancer uses laser light. The apparatus can achieve diagnosis and treatment with a single laser light source. The apparatus uses a semiconductor laser that generates light with a narrow full width at half maximum and which has a variable wavelength. The laser light is projected into the vicinity of the focus of a tumor. Fluorescence emitted from a photosensitizer excited by the irradiating laser light is separated, analyzed and displayed. The apparatus is simpler and more effective than prior versions.
