A DC motor having no commutator but having an air gap, having a permanently magnetic inner and outer rotor and having a winding which is controlled by a rotation position detector, generates an alternating field in operation and hence generates an electromagnetic torque having gaps, the poles of the rotor (2) having a magnetisation whose positive and negative amplitudes each contain two maxima with a minimum between them, it being possible to describe the resulting curve shape as a superimposition of two sinusoidal magnetisation curves of different frequency and amplitude, and the air gap initially tapering in a region (15) between two slot openings (8, 9), the greatest width of said air gap starting close to the rear edge (25) (seen in the rotation direction) of a slot opening (9), in particular over an angle region from 30 DEG to 70 DEG electrical, then running at a constant width (region 14) in a region (14) up to the front edge (26) of the other slot opening (8), in particular over an angle region from 150 DEG to 110 DEG electrical, and subsequently starting with its greatest width again on the rear edge (25) of the other slot opening (8). <IMAGE>
