PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology of suppressing deterioration in the image quality in electronic zooming, while preventing deterioration of the convenience for a user. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus disclosed herein with an electronic zoom function includes an imaging element for applying photoelectric conversion to an object image; a switching section that switches between a first read mode, wherein pixel signals of an image of the imaging element are read at a first information reduction rate, when the information amount is reduced by interleaving or summating the pixel signals and a second read mode, wherein pixel signals within a second range smaller than a first range are read by reducing the pixel signals at a reduction rate smaller than the first information reduction rate or read without reduction; and a control section for controlling the switching section for switching between the first read mode and the second read mode, depending on a magnification rate of electronic zooming, and the control section controls the zoom magnification rate for switching processing of the read mode by the switching section differently between the case of the electronic zooming operated at a telescopic side and the case of the electronic zooming operated at a wide angle side.
