PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized light separation element being easily manufac tured and having a high utilization factor of light. SOLUTION: The polarized light separation element is provided with a diffraction optical element layer (2) composed of a nearly optically isotropic transparent sheet and having a diffraction grating plane (2a) and a liquid crystal layer (3) composed of a birefringent material with optical anisotropy and being adjacent to the diffraction grating plane (2a). The diffraction optical element layer (2) has 0.1-1 mm thickness. |
