PURPOSE:To obtain the titled yarn having high modulus of elasticity, by hydrogenating coal tar (pitch), heating the coal tar at a specific temperature under reflux, then heat-treating the heated pitch at temperature lower than the temperature and further carrying out melt spinning. CONSTITUTION:Coal tar (pitch) is hydrogenated at 400-500 deg.C and an insoluble solid content is removed by vacuum filtration, etc. Then, the hydrogenated pitch is heated to 450-500 deg.C at >=30 deg.C/min rate of heating under reflux and further the heated pitch is heat-treated at 400-450 deg.C under reduced pressure or by introducing an inert gas such as nitrogen gas, etc. Then, the prepared pitch is subjected to melt spinning, to infusible treatment in the presence of oxygen at 280-400 deg.C, further carbonized in an inert gas at 1,000-1,500 deg.C and, if necessary, graphitized at >=2,000 deg.C to give the aimed yarn.
