The surgical operation machine using a laser beam as a knife for cutting body tissue etc. is controlled by a manipulator combined with the laser tube. The knife instrument can be easily detached from and fitted to the apparatus, and includes a microscope and mirror system. Also the laser tube can be removed. This arrangement allows the equipment to be also adapted to be used for micro surgery. The manipulator is then connected to the mirror unit and the laser knife can be changed over from one type of use to the other. The axis of the laser tube is aligned with a visible light beam so that the latter illuminates the cutting area. It can be generated from a He/Ne laser beam.
