PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a quench cooler having the high efficiency for high gas temperature or liquid temperature end high pressure. SOLUTION: This quench cooler for cooling flowing hot gas comprises a cylindrical overcoat 10, which is coupled to a hot gas conduit and a cold gas conduit. And has a water injecting means 30. A filler column 13 for filling the flow cross section of the overcoat 10 is placed at the downstream of the means 30. The column has an intrinsic coating 14, and formed as a cartridge which can be inserted into the overcoat. Thus, the cooler having the compact structure having easy inspection and maintenance is obtained.
