PURPOSE: To decrease the number of stages and to reduce a manufacturing cost by forming recessed parts directly on a first glass blank, packing a second glass blank to be formed as cores into these recessed parts and removing the overflowing glass blank, then joining the glass blank similar to the first glass blank. CONSTITUTION: The glass blank having both flat surfaces corresponding to clad layers, for example, SiO2 , is arranged between upper and lower metal molds and is press formed under heating. The glass blank having the refractive index different from the refractive index of the SiO2 of the clad layers, for example, Ge-SiO2 , is deposited by a physical vapor deposition method over the entire protective film in the upper part of the press formed goods. At this time, the Ge-SiO2 is deposited to a sufficient film thickness in the recessed parts subjected to the press forming until the Ge-SiO2 is sufficiently packed therein. Next, a part of the Ge-SiO2 and/or protective film of the press formed SiO2 is polished until the desired core shape of optical waveguides is formed. The glass blank which is the same as the glass blank subjected to the pressing or has nearly the same refractive index as the refractive index, for example, SiO2 , is deposited on the polished surface by the physical vapor deposition method. |
