PURPOSE: To improve display quality by surely causing writing discharge in a large capacity gas discharge display panel. CONSTITUTION: When writing discharge is performed by line successive scanning in a gas discharge display panel, the panel is controlled so that applying times tpw1 , tpw2 ,... tpw N of writing discharge voltage VS, VD are made different depending on a writing discharge voltage applying time. A long writing time tpw is provided for a discharge cell or a discharge cell block having a long elapse time from a priming discharge finish time. when priming discharge of one time is caused preceding plural writing discharge periods, a long writing discharge voltage applying time is provided for a writing discharge period having a longer elapse time from a priming discharge finish time. Sufficient brightness and display quality is obtained by shortening a writing discharge time.
