PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multilingual navigation apparatus which does not require increase in the storage capacity of the navigation apparatus, according to the number of languages to be dealt with. SOLUTION: When an external storage device in which language data of any language is stored is connected to the navigation apparatus (steps S10 and S20), specification codes, corresponding to characters to be displayed and the content of speech to be outputted, are outputted from the navigation apparatus to the external storage device (step S30). Language data, outputted from the external storage device according to the specification codes, are received at the navigation apparatus (step S40) and characters and speech output are displayed on the basis of received language data (steps S60 and S70).
