The invention relates to a process for producing purpose-made concrete blocks, in which process concrete is filled into moulds, is optionally pre-compacted by vibration and is re-filled with facing concrete, and main compaction subsequently takes place by vibration. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out such a process. In order to improve the process and the apparatus such that the cycle times of the machine are shortened and, at the same time, the quality of the blocks produced is improved, the invention proposes that the vibrations are directional linear vibrations and the entire vibration procedure runs with adjustable frequency and amplitude, and that, in the case of the appertaining apparatus, the vibrator is a linearly vibrating piston vibrator (14) driven by compressed air. <IMAGE>
