<p>1276312 Damping apparatus for printing machines MILLER PRINTING MACHINERY CO 11 June 1969 [19 June 1968] 29556/69 Heading B6C A damping apparatus for a rotary printing press, comprises a fountain roller 16, a metering roller 20, an intermediate roller 22 which may reciprocate axially, and one or more forme rollers 24, 26, the forme rollers 24, 26 being movable away from the plate cylinder 14 whilst still remaining in contact with and receiving damping fluid from the intermediate roller 22 so that transfer of ink to the damping apparatus is prevented. Subsequently, the forme rollers 24, 26 are moved away from the intermediate roller 22 and the metering roller 20 is then moved away from the fountain roller 16 whilst remaining in contact with the roller 22. The same sequence of operations but in reverse occurs when damping fluid is to be applied to the plate cylinder. The mechanism for moving the forme roller 24 comprises a member 48 rotatable about the shaft 44 of the intermediate roller 22 and engaging the shaft 34 of the forme roller 24 by means of a part 50 and a screw 52. The shaft 34 can move in a guideway 38 in a fixed block 36, the guideway having a part 40 concentric with the shaft 44 and a part 46 which extends away from the shaft so that during anti-clockwise movement of the member 48, the roller 24 is first moved away from the cylinder 14 and is then separated from the roller 22. Another member 78 rotatable about the shaft 44 has a follower roller 82 engaging a cam 32 and also has a projection 84 engaged by a threaded rod 58 mounted in a part 54 of the member 48. The member 48 is urged clockwise so as to maintain the rod 58 in contact with the projection 84 by means of a spring-biased rod 66 connected to an arm 64 on the member 48. Contact between the forme roller 24 and plate cylinder 14 can be adjusted by means of the threaded rod 58. The cam 32 is so contoured that its rotation effects movement of the forme roller 24. The movement of the forme roller 26 is brought about by mechanism similar to that employed for the roller 22 and is operated by the same cam 32. The shaft 124 of the metering roller 20 rests in a U-shaped saddle 122, Fig. 2b, carried by a lever 116 having a pin- and-slot connection 112, 120 with a link 108 connected to a crank 104 keyed to the shaft 88 of the cam 32. By this arrangement, the roller 20 is moved as described above.</p> |
