In a manual or automatic slack adjuster for vehicle brakes, of the kind having a lever 2 rotatable about a cam shaft or other brake applying shaft and adjustably connected to the shaft via a worm 7 journalled in the lever and engaging a worm wheel 4 splined or otherwise secured to the shaft, the teeth of the worm and worm wheel, as viewed in a plane containing the axis of the worm and perpendicular to the shaft (Fig. 2), are asymmetrical, the faces 15, 16 of the teeth which engage when the adjuster is transmitting braking force being inclined at a small angle, between 13 and 17 degrees, to a plane perpendicular to the worm axis and a plane passing through the axis of the shaft, respectively, while the faces 17, 18 of the teeth which engage only during brake release are inclined at a larger angle, between 37 and 43 degrees, to these planes. The adjuster shown is manually operated by application of a tool to polygonally shaped head 11. |
