1505617 Partial carbodiimidization of organic isocyanates BAYER AG 20 Aug 1976 [23 Aug 1975] 34780/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Partial carbodiimidization of the isocyanate groups of a mono- and/or poly-isocyanate is effected by mixing, at 0-200‹ C., the isocyanate with from 0À1 to 100 p.p.m. of a phosphorus compound of general formula where R is H, alkyl, halo-alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, phenyl or alkyl- or halo-phenyl; a, b, c and d are each H, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl or a and b, b and c or c and d, together with the C atoms to which they are attached, may form a cycloaliphatic ring; and X is O or S, and terminating the carbodiimidization reaction, after the evolution of 1-90% of the theoretical quantity of CO 2 which would be evolved by carbodiimidization of all the -NCO groups, by adding to the phosphorus compound at least an equivalent quantity of a compound which deactivates it by formation of a salt or adduct therewith. The deactivating compound may be HCl, HBr or an inorganic or organic acid chloride or bromide. The invention also includes an isocyanate mixture comprising a partially carbodiimidized isocyanate and 0À1-100 p.p.m. of a phosphorus compound of the above general formulµ but wherein R is C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy or phenyl, a, b, c and d are each H or C 1-4 alkyl, and X is oxygen, the phosphorus compound being in a form deactivated by a deactivating compound as specified above. In examples, 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- diisocyanatodiphenylmethane and/or tolylene-2,4- or 2,6-diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, isophorone diisocyanate and a mixture of biuretized hexamethylenediisocyanate and tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate are partially carbodiimidized; phenylisocyanate is partially carbodiimidized, the carbodiimide formed then reacting with further isocyanate to give triphenyluretonimine; and o,o<SP>1</SP>-ditolylcarbodiimide is prepared by partial carbodiimidization of o-tolylisocyanate followed by fractionation and separation of non-carbodiimidized isocyanate.
