The process disclosed concerns the cleaning of workpieces contaminated with organic matter, using a fluid which is introduced under pressure into a pressure vessel loaded with workpieces. The invention calls for the fluid to be circulated in the pressure vessel during the cleaning operation, liquified gases such as carbon dioxide preferably being used as the cleaning fluid. The use of a heat exchanger enables the temperature of the fluid to be controlled during the cleaning process.
