The present invention relates to the use of cycloolefin copolymers for producing films. For cycloolefin copolymers, conditions have been found under which biaxia lly oriented films without heat-sealable layers can be firmly bonded with one anothe r. The film temperatures found for this were above the glass transition temperature by from 5 to 70.degree.C, and the times found were from 0.1 sec to 10 sec. As a res ult of the invention, layers made from cycloolefin copolymer and having a thickness ~ 50 .m u.m have been used for the first time as heat-sealable layers, replacing cycloolefin copolymers having higher glass transition temperatures.
