PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic acrylonitrile derivative, by which the aromatic acrylonitrile derivative (preferably trans isomers) can profitably be produced from an aromatic carboxyaldehyde derivative by a simple method under mild conditions. SOLUTION: This method for producing the aromatic acrylonitrile derivative, characterized by reacting the aromatic carboxyaldehyde derivative with acetonitile in the presence of a base in an organic solvent having a relative permittivity of <=10 at 20 to 25 deg.C.
