The locking device for a gear lever (14) in a gearbox (10) comprises a rigid bar (26) which is mounted on a fixed part (22) of the gearbox through a hole in the protection bellows (18) around the lever. The lever carries a deformable resilient clip which engages and locks on the bar by displacement of the lever into a pre-specified position, such as neutral. The part of the bar on which the clip engages has a reduced dimension and is limited by shoulders which immobilize the lever in the bar axial direction.
