The method involves generating a signal representing the revolution rate of at least one roller with at least one measurement transducer (5) and deriving the speed and distance in an electronic signal processor. The center of gravity speed is measured after grounding the blade with the transducer whilst the other blade is off the ground. The current center of gravity speed is used to derive the distance covered or the speed.
