PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for recording and reproducing monitor video data, whose S/N deterioration is small by shortening the operating time of a VTR, and reducing the deterioration of magnetic tapes or heads or mechanisms. SOLUTION: In this monitor video data recording/reproducing unit for storing video signals continuously generated over a long time on a magnetic tape, the video signal from a video camera is converted into a digital signal through an A/D circuit 12 and compression/encoded by a compression encoding/decoding circuit 3, and compressed on a time axis by a time axis compressing circuit 100 constituted of a first memory 4, a second memory, an SCSI controller 5, and an HDD 7, and recorded via an I/F circuit 14 on the magnetic tape of a VTR 9 of D-VHS. Since the video data from the compression encoding/decoding circuit 3 are compressed on the time axis by the time axis compressing circuit 100, the recording time of the video data on the magnetic tape is shorter than the recording time. So, the VTR 9 is required only to record the video data to the magnetic tape intermittently, then a magnetic tape recorder for home use can be utilized, and damages to the tape are also reduced.
