NEW MATERIAL:A squarium compound expressed by formula I. USE:An electric charge generating substance for electrophotographic lamination type photosensitive materials, useful as optical recording media, e.g. semiconductor laser printers, intelligent copiers, laser disks, etc., exhibiting flat photosensitivity within 400-850nm wavelength range, and having sufficient photosensitivity in all the visible and near infrared regions. PREPARATION:3,4-Dihydroxy-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione (aquaric acid) expressed by formula II is reacted with ethyl methylphenylaminoacetate expressed by formula III in a solvent, e.g. n-butyl alcohol, at 100-140 deg.C for 3-5hr to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
