PURPOSE: To provide an optical fiber star coupler having a shape capable of compacting and simplifying input and output transmission fiber routes and capable of minimizing an insertion loss and minimizing the influence of manufacturing tolerance to the loss. CONSTITUTION: The star coupler has a curved flexible optical ribbon 48 so that an input fiber 18 and an output fiber 20 can be fitted to the same side of the coupler. Connectors 30, 40 match the straight arrays 18', 20' of fiber end parts with respective end parts 50 of the ribbon 48. The upper and lower edges of the sidewall of the ribbon 48 are rounded so as to be matched with the outlines of the fiber end parts 28 of respective arrays 18', 20'. The thickness of the ribbon 48 is about 91% the diameter of the fiber so as to minimize an insertion loss. |
