Methods and apparatus for determining an analyte value are disclosed. In the method and apparatus, first sensor data is received from an analyte sensor and a previously determine rate of change of sensor data stored in a memory is retrieved. The rate of change of sensor data is then updated based on the received sensor data and previously received sensor data. A lag compensation of the sensor data is then performed based on the previously determined rate of change of sensor data to generate lag compensated previously received sensor data.
